Super Mario RPG was one of the best games for the SNES and a different way to enjoy the series if you aren’t a fan of platforming. It had several features and the Switch version brings back the hidden treasure chests. As the name implies these are hidden, and in order to find them you need to jump while standing on specific tiles, or else they will stay invisible.
Worry not though in this guide we have listed down the locations where you can find them. You can also find out the secret items that you can get from these chests.
How to Find Hidden Treasure Chests in Super Mario RPG & 1st Location
In case you want to do it on your own and just need a little hint, then you need to wear the Signal Ring in order to find hidden chests. You can get it from the Mushroom Kingdom Item Shop.
While the ring is equipped, whenever you walk into a room where there is a hidden chest, the ring will alert you about it. Make sure to equip it as just having it in your inventory won’t make it of any use.
Minor spoilers ahead: The procedure to unlock the Signal Ring is also where you get your first treasure chest.
- Go to Mushroom Kingdom.
- Next, go to the Item Shop.
- On the right you can find some stairs leading down.
- Head below and you can talk to the toad.
- He will ask you to stand in front of him and jump.
- Jump and you will reveal the treasure chest.
- Now, jump again to get the special flower.
- The toad will now give you the Signal Ring.

There are a total of 39 Treasure Chests that you can find, here is the list of their locations and rewards:

2nd Chest Location
- You can find the second chest in the same Item Shop where you got the Signal Ring.
- Jump on the toad’s head.
- He will walk toward the right corner tile.
- Now, jump and you will reveal the hidden chest.
- Open it to get a Special Flower.
3rd Chest Location
- Go to the Castle in the Mushroom Kingdom.
- After entering, run ahead and then jump on the toad’s head standing in front of the doors.
- Jump on the platform above and stand on the middle tile then jump to reveal the hidden chest.
- Open it to get a Frog Coin.
4th Chest Location
- Go to Bandit’s Way.
- Next, go right and then use the red flower to reach the plateau.
- On your right should be two yellow tiles.
- Use them to reach the other side.
- Here, you can find the hidden chest between the red and purple flowers.
- Use the red flower to jump and open the chest.
- From it, you will get a Croaka Cola.
5th Chest Location – Super Mario RPG Hidden Treasure
- Open your Map and go to the Tadpole region and travel to Rose Town.
- From the town’s Welcome sign, turn left and go up inside the house.
- Use the stairs again to go up.
- Finally, jump on the bed to find the hidden chest.
- Open it to get a Frog coin.
6th Chest Location
- Turn first right from the town’s welcome sign and the second house will be the item shop.
- Inside the shop go back and climb the wooden box.
- Go top-left and jump on the corner to find the hidden chest.
- From it you will get a Frog Coin.
7th Chest Location
- Open your map and while still in Tadpole Pond Region, fast travel to the Forest Maze.
- As soon as you get here, walk a few steps left and jump.
- You should ideally be standing exactly opposite from the red mushroom in the corner.
- Open it and you will get a Croaka Cola.
8th Chest Location
- After getting the seventh chest, go to the next room and use the tree bark to go down.
- Keep going right on the natural path and exit this area.
- When you come out of the tree pipe on the other side, walk a few steps to the top-left corner.
- Jump here and you will find the hidden treasure chest.
- It will give you a Frog coin.
9th Chest Location
- Continuing from the area where you found the above chest, go to the next room and use the first tree pipe on the right.
- Go left as shown in the above image and jump to get the chest.
- From it, you will get a special flower.
10th Chest Location
- Go back to the previous room from the ninth chest and use the middle left, tree pipe.
- The next treasure chest can be found by going a few steps upwards and jumping.
- Opening it just says bad luck as the chest was empty.
11th Chest Location
- Exit the 10th chest location and use the topmost tree pipe.
- Go towards the top side of the room and jump. Check the image for reference.
- You will find a chest here that gives you a Croaka Cola.
12th Chest Location
- For the 12th chest continue to the next room and use the tree pipe here.
- Keep following the right path for the next two rooms. In the second room use the clown-face jump pad and go up.
- Next, go right for the next two rooms.
- Here, go down then take another right, and then go up.
- Finally, in this room, you should be able to find the treasure chest in the left corner.
- It gives you a red essence.
13th Chest Location
The 13th chest lies in the Pipe Vault.
- Open your map and go to the Pipe Vault entrance in the Tadpole Pond Region.
- Head down the green pipe in front of you.
- Follow the natural path for the next two rooms.
- In the second room use the last pipe.
- Next, use the second pipe.
- Jump near the yellow platform to reveal a yellow tile, and use it to reach the yellow platform.
- Finally, jump in front and you will find the 13th hidden treasure chest.
- Open it to get a frog coin.
