Minecraft features a plethora of passive mobs that can serve you as companions, as you progress into the game. One of these mobs includes cute feline animals that you can pet after a long day of hard work. You can also use Cats to ward off various creepers and Phantoms. But as players try to pet these stray cats in Minecraft, they’re a bit confused about taming or befriending them.
Don’t worry, check out our guide on how to tame a Cat in Minecraft. In our guide, we have also mentioned the food required for taming them and all the steps to befriend them as a pet. But before we start, let’s find out where to find these feline mobs in the game. So, here’s everything you need to know.
Where to Find Cats in Minecraft
You can find cats located mainly in the villages and Swamp huts. Being easier to find in different villages, these stray cats are relatively easier to find than other passive mobs. You can find them spawning in villages with at least one villager and four beds.
While being spoiled for choice, this gives you a variety to choose colors for the type of cats. If you are looking for Black cats specifically, note that they spawn only during Moon. You can find them alongside a witch inside the Swamp huts.
How to Tame a Cat in Minecraft
You can tame any Stray cat using raw cod or salmon. As soon as you do so, the tamed cat will follow you around wherever you go. On top of that, they can teleport back to the player if you lose them for more than 12 blocks. Considering you must feed multiple times before you tame the cat, we recommend being stacked up before approaching.
So, here’s how to tame a Stray cat in Minecraft:
- Find and collect some raw cod or salmon from a nearby river, lake, or other water bodies.
- After collecting it, find a cat and slowly approach the passive mob.
- Equip the raw food and feed the cat by slowly approaching it.
- As you keep on feeding it, you can find some hearts hovering above the cat.
- Once the cat is fed enough, the hearts will disappear and a red collar will appear on its neck.
Note that you can change the color of these collars using various dyes. It’s also worth noting that an untamed cat can sprint away if you haven’t equipped any raw fish. So, ensure that you have equipped a raw cod or salmon before approaching an untamed cat.
If you don’t want the cat to follow you, you can command it to sit down and it will stop following you around.
