PS5 Graphics Card Equivalent (Answered)

As we all know, the PS5’s graphics card is also from the AMD brand, based on the RDNA 2 microarchitecture with 36 compute units and 10.3 teraflops. Now that we know the hardware that PS5 has, it is inevitable to ask ourselves the question of what GPU is equivalent to PS5, right? There are many people who want to know the PS5 graphics card alternative for their PC so that they can experience the same graphics power with the highest resolutions. So, in this article, you will learn what graphics card is the equivalent of PS5 in detail below.

What Graphics Card Is the PS5 GPU Equivalent To?

The PS5 comes with AMD Radeon RDNA 2-based graphics engine, which means that it could have a lot of the most important advanced features of that one, but it is likely that it will not have a significant advance in terms of IPC and that it is, therefore, at the level of the RDNA architecture in terms of raw performance under the same configuration (same shaders at the same frequency).

We already have that foundation clear, so let’s go over the full PS5 GPU specs:

  • 2,304 shaders.
  • 144 texturing units.
  • 64 raster units.
  • 256-bit bus and 14 GHz GDDR6 memory, which gives us a bandwidth of 448 GB/s.
  • GPU 2.23 GHz dynamic frequency (maximum, not stable).

If these specifications sound familiar to you, you will be surprised to know that they are the same as those of a Radeon RX 5700 graphics card, although in this case with a higher maximum frequency. The memory is unified, which means that although the system mounts 16 GB of GDDR6, it is distributed between RAM and VRAM, and a part must be reserved for the system.

Sony has not specified anything, but it is clear that between 2.5 GB and 3 GB will be reserved for the system and the base applications, which would leave us free, in the best of cases, 13.5 GB free to distribute between RAM and VRAM. If this is confirmed, it is most likely that 8 GB is used as RAM and that the other 5.5 GB is used as graphics memory, which would leave us with a lower figure than the 8 GB of graphics memory that a Radeon RX 5700 brings.

The raw performance of the PS5 GPU will depend, to a large extent, on how long it is able to maintain those 2.23 GHz maximum peaks. Here we are talking about a GPU integrated into an APU, so it is hard to believe that it’s going to be possible to sustainably maintain those frequencies, and in the end, it will almost always stay below 2 GHz.

With all this in mind, the conclusion is very clear, the PS5 GPU could be equivalent to a graphics card halfway between the Radeon RX 5600 XT and the Radeon RX 5700 (RTX 2060 or RTX 2060 Super), albeit with a superior base architecture and hardware dedicated to ray tracing.
