Apple’s new 14 Pro smartphone features a larger 48-megapixel primary sensor than the current 12-megapixel sensor used on the iPhone 13 Pro. The heavy price increases on the iPhone 14 components also clearly affect the technical data sheet which, especially for the Pro models, includes different specifications compared to the smooth variants. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max feature a new 48-megapixel camera, based on Sony’s IMX803 sensor, with 1.22um native pixels that combine to 2.44um in pixels. For comparison, the iPhone 13 Pro had the 12MP IMX703 sensor.
The improvements, however, have also embraced the ultra wide-angle cameras of the two devices. The IMX772 with a pixel pitch of 1um is retired: in its place comes the 1.4um IMX633: in fact, as observed by many, the ultra wide-angle sensor of the iPhone 14 Pro is on par with that of the main camera of the iPhone 12 Pro. This gives a good idea of how Apple worked on the sensor.
As far as selfie cameras go, Apple swapped the IMX514 for the IMX714. The technical details of the two sensors, however, are unknown. The telephoto lens and ToF sensor, on the other hand, remain unchanged compared to the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
The iPhone 14 Pro variants seem to change a lot compared to the last generation. They have a double pill opening in place of the camera and Face ID notch. Plus, they have a new 48MP sensor for next-level video and photography.
Instead, it seems that the standard models and the Max model (same specifications as the standard but 6.68-inch screen) will still have the A15 Bionic processor presented this year, albeit with more RAM (6 instead of the current 4GB).
In addition, the iPhone 14 Pro should improve photographic and computational capabilities compared to the current generation. In fact, it will come with the A16 Bionic chip (manufactured by TSMC with a 4-nanometer process) and 6GB of LPDDR5 RAM, with flash memory ranging from 128GB to 1TB. It should have a 6.06-inch LTPO OLED display with a variable refresh rate and 2532 x 1170 pixel resolution.
