PS5 Backward Compatibility With PS3, PS2, & PS1 Incoming, According To a New Sony Patent?

In the past few days, we have informed you about the possibility that Sony intends to close the stores dedicated to PS3, PSP, and PS Vita games in the coming months. But do not worry, as it would seem that the Japanese giant intends to surprise (positively) its fans and owners of PS5 with the addition of a highly anticipated feature, namely backward compatibility to PS1, PS2, and PlayStation 3 games.

On March 18, the company would have filed a new patent called “Method and Apparatus for Awarding Trophies,” which, although at first glance it may seem uninteresting, reveals within it the possibility of awarding trophies for emulated games, and the only ones “legacy” titles that the Japanese house would emulate in 2021 would be those of PS1, PS2, and PS3.

Although the patent in question does not make any specific reference to PS5, and consequently to the actual support of the new Sony flagship for the titles of the previous consoles, inside it presents some references to emulation:

A computer-implemented method assigns one or more trophies to a user. A game is emulated in response to a request from a client device. A trophy trigger is detected during emulation of the game by comparing a memory value of the emulated game to a predetermined value and assigning the one or more trophies to the user based on the detected trophy trigger.

At the moment Sony has not yet expressed itself on the matter, so it is not clear whether the patent in question actually refers to an extension of the backward compatibility of PS5, which in this way would not be compatible exclusively with PlayStation 4 games, but also with those PS1, PS2 and PS3.

Therefore, we advise you to take the information in the patent with due precautions. Waiting to find out more details on the subject, we remind you that PlayStation 5 made its official debut on November 12, 2020, and although at the moment it is difficult to find, in the coming months the company could stabilize stocks in warehouses.
